Fine Arts at Gadsden State Community College
The Division of Language & Fine Arts of Gadsden State Community College includes the Departments of Art, English, Foreign Languages, Music, Speech, Theatre and the Alabama Language Institute. As one of the largest two-year colleges in Alabama, Gadsden State offers an incredible assortment of language and fine arts courses typically not available at many two-year colleges. In choosing art electives, students may select from a full range of art course work either broadly based or with concentration in the areas of painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, ceramics or graphic design. The Art Department offers courses year round at Wallace Drive and Ayers.
Gadsden States's program in English encourages students to discover the pleasures and values of the written word. The program introduces students to the works of major writers and interesting writers who have not yet attained that status. The program also provides a close look at the ways in which good writing gains its power.
The English curriculum emphasizes historical development by providing survey courses in British and American literature and in each era of literature in English. The curriculum also allows study of individual authors and offers courses in special topics, themes, and several genres in world literature.
Foreign Languages Department
The study of foreign languages is an integral part of a liberal arts education. It gives students a means of breaking through the barrier of a single speech and culture pattern and provides an encounter with some of the world’s great literatures, cultural traditions, and social models. It is also invaluable for those seeking careers in business and commerce, civil service, education, international affairs, media, social services, law enforcement, and scholarly research.
The Gadsden State Music Department offers classes for the musical novice as well as performance classes for the seasoned performer. Beginner instrumental and vocal courses are taught in private lessons and in typical classroom settings. The Gadsden State Show Band under the direction of Dr. Matt Leder is regarded as one of the leading two-year college bands in the Southeast United States. The critically acclaimed Acapella Choir led by John Harrell performs at many College functions and has an annual tour.
This speech department has several major areas of study, including organizational and group communication, interpersonal and family communication, political communication, rhetoric and public discourse, communication in cultural contexts, and mass communication.
From Introduction to Theatre courses to full-scale musical theatre productions the Gadsden State Theatre Department offers numerous opportunities to those interested in the performing arts.
